The only downside to running a movie blog is that you see SO many clips and trailers that they all start to blend together in a way. Even when they're good, you've already seen 23 by noon so it can be overwhelming at times.
But sometimes you come across something so out there, so its own thing, that you pay attention and go WTF. This trailer for a weird stop-motion kids movie called The Lady of Names is one of those trailers for me. It was made in Canada by one guy named Adam Ciolfi. Yes, one dude plays creator, director, animator, editor and visual FX guy on this thing.
The weird thing for me about this trailer is that, yeah it's weird and I have no idea what's going on... and there's a giant magic mushroom head guy... but it's not trying to be ironic at all. And I love how crude the puppetry is. I don't know, there's something off kilter and refreshing about this thing and I want to see more.
Here's the beef:
A librarian discovers the power of magic when an ill-conceived wish catapults her into the world of fairy tales. She falls into the clutches of the Troll King, a monster obsessed with imprisoning all the fairy tale folk. Her only hope for rescue is Zack Driscoll, a young handyman in love with her. Kidnapped by a pompous mushroom and an elfin creature, Zack braves goblin magic and the icy domain of the Memine to reach the home of the Great Owl. The Owl reveals the key to the Troll King's power. Armed with this knowledge, Zack and his friends race back to the tower thereby setting the stage for the last epic battle between our heroes and the armies of the Troll King.
