Marina Antunes [Celluloid 07.25.11] movie trailer news action fantasy

One of the things I've appreciated about the martial arts epics that I've seen over the last few years is that regardless of how fantastical they are, they try very hard to keep some semblance of reality. Sure the action sequences are wire wonderful works of art and the set design on many of these are spectacular but the effects are so seamless, you tend to forget that they're there at all. That seemed to be the truth at the beginning of the influx but over the years, the movies have changed quite a bit losing some of the magic for grander and more bombastic effects sequences and now it seems we've entered the next step in the evolutionary ladder – the bad special effects. Why on earth are we moving backwards?

For all I know, this may not be the first of the crummy looking titles but it's the first that's crossed my line of sight and wow, it's spectacularly bad. Directed by Tony Ching Siu-Tung, a man best known and respected for his outstanding work as a fight choreographer, The Sorcerer and the White Snake appears to be a chunk of B-movie fantasy action. It stars Jet Li as a monk who tries to save a dude who has fallen in love with a snake demon.

True, B-movie action doesn't necessarily make for a bad movie but when the effects and action sequences are the thing that sell your film, it's kind of important to get those right and sadly, that doesn't seem to be working here.

Twitch had the first look at an English subtitled trailer last week which showed some of the questionable effects but a new, longer trailer has appeared online and it only cements my original feelings on the questionable effects.

Check out both trailers below.

It looks like a 5/10. Why can't they make another "Hero"?
