Christopher Webster [Celluloid 08.29.11] movie trailer scifi thriller dystopic

MTV premiered the first trailer for Lionsgate's adaptation of The Hunger Games at the MTV Video Music Awards last night. Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone) who plays Katniss is the focus here, along with the many many trees she runs through. There's not much to wax on about here, so I'll leave my editorializing until we see more footage from the film.

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

It's hard to tell whether the teaser has been put together in a slapdash fashion, or this is director Gary Ross' attempt at being "edgy." Remember, this is the dude that did Seabiscuit.

I was expecting at least a short scene. This is so underwhelming.

I really liked the first book, but my enjoyment went down hill fast for the second and third. This teaser didn't do anything to restore the series in my eyes.
