Christopher Webster [Celluloid 10.20.11] movie trailer news scifi action

People seem determined to call Chronicle a "found-footage" film, but I think that's selling it a bit short. Yes there is clearly POV stuff going on here and the shoot-and-laugh, YouTube generation is a clear influencer, but much of what I'm seeing in this trailer is a proper film, peppered with found-footage beats. For instance, who was filming the shot of the kid flying through the sky? Or crushing the cars?

At any rate, Chronicle impresses for a few reasons. I had read an interview with the writer Max Landis (yep, son THE John Landis) where he discussed the film and I didn't know how it would work. But clearly, the concept and execution are a perfect synergy. Also, it's about real people not "supermen" that were created in some antiquated 1930s comic series. It also looks to go very very dark. So yeah, colour me impressed.

Chronicle is directed by first-timer, Josh Trank. It was written by Landis who is making a bit of a splash lately having optioned three projects very quickly. If Chronicle is as big as I think it will be, we'll be hearing from him a lot I think.

Synopsis:
Three high school students and friends make an incredible discovery, leading to them developing uncanny superpowers beyond their understanding. As they learn to control their abilities, and initially use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control, and their darker sides soon begin to take over.

Chronicle in theaters everywhere on February 3rd, 2012 early next year.

I object to a movie clearly ripping off Akira without Asian actors.

Okay, I'm joking. Sort of. Does look interesting, though.

I stopped reading after "found-footage film" (even if that's selling this film short, like you say) - really tired of that gimmick...

"Superhero" movies get closer and closer to what I want but always seem to fall short.
