A few days back, it was reported that Die Hard 2 director Renny Harlin would direct a film based on a mysterious historical event called the "Dyatlov Pass Incident". In short, the "incident" refers to the mysterious deaths of nine skiers in the northern Ural Mountains back in 1959. The mystery lingers to this day and has been the source of much speculation since the body's were found without clothes and mutilated.
Word is that the still untitled film will not be about the skiers from 1959, but will be about "contemporary students on a trek to investigate the mystery." So, perhaps more of a Blair Witch thing.
Harlin said: "I was fascinated by this story, which remains one of the great unsolved mysteries of modern paranormal lore. The facts, the script, and the very dramatic setting convinced me that there is a thrilling movie there, just waiting to rivet audiences."
So what's at the heart of this mystery? Well, we've got our hands on the first sales art for the film and I'd say there's a definite alien vibe going on, what with those lights in the sky.
Check the large poster below.
The project will start shooting on location in Russia in March.

Intriguing story.
Shame its in the hands of a vacuous director.
I also lost interest at "contemporary students".

La storia e' molto interessante, ma Harlin e' un regista molto sopravvalutato...

Harlin's track record is pretty awful, I like to compare him to Joel Schumacher. They're both journeymen, capable -at best- of creating no-brain entertainment. Jeez, with stuff like "Exorcist: The Beginning", "Deep Blue Sea" and in Schumacher's case.. well, more-or-less his entire oeuvre (sans Falling Down perhaps) this upcoming project will most likely end up as an 5.5'er at IMDb

"covered by Cracked has covered the" ugh
Solved by assumption and omitting facts.

Well, assuming is all we can do, as there are no witnesses. But Cracked's summary is pretty spot on. We don't know, and will never know, why the group separated in the darkness, but their injuries are not that mysterious. The only "facts" Cracked omitted are the ones that were made up decades later by investigators trying to make the whole thing sound more mysterious that it really was. I mean, for crying out loud, why would anyone even check for radiation on the clothes of victims of a hiking accident? Clearly, the "radiation" is fiction. The only factual error I see that Cracked made is giving credence to the "tans" the victims allegedly had, but that claim only comes from one guy who says, not terrible credibly, that he was at the funerals when he was a child.

Well if you believe certain facts were made up, its pointless discussing it with you.

Gawd. Renny Harlin? Really? Director of the world's dumbest pirate movie? (see "Cutthroat Island".) That such an intensely creepy story (Dyatlov Pass) was handed off to a brainless hack the likes of Harlin is precisely what's wrong with Hollywood today. Ugh...
