Marina Antunes [Celluloid 07.20.12] drama

The two teasers for Paul Thomas Anderson's upcoming take on what may (or may not be) the birth of scientology, have pretty much marked The Master as a must see and the first full trailer cements the notion. Not only does it look fantastic (thanks in part to cinematographer Mihai Malaimare Jr.) but this trailer is beautifully cut, particularly in the second half.

The cast, which includes Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams, looks fantastic as Anderson continues his exploration of charismatic but extreme individuals. This first trailer is very reminiscent in tone and rhythm of the There Will Be Blood trailer and that is most definitely a good thing.

The official synopsis reads:

A 1950s-set drama centered on the relationship between a charismatic intellectual known as "the Master" whose faith-based organization begins to catch on in America, and a young drifter who becomes his right-hand man.

Mark your calendars for October 12th.
