quietearth [Celluloid 08.13.12] Romania post apocalyptic scifi arthouse

Described as a "European-bicycle-driven-talky-PA-artsy-flick", George Dorobantu's second feature has been in the works for quite a while. We first reported on it back in 2008, shortly after the release of his one room thriller Elevator which was great all around, except for a couple of horrible focus pulls.

Dorobantu is "busting his butt" to finish the film, which has been running the founding rounds, and while he's not giving up any info on a trailer, I'm hoping we'll see one soon.

Three years after an apocalyptic event has decimated 99.99% of the planet’s population, a young man ends his dramatic pilgrimage that brought him to a grim conclusion: none of his relatives, friends or acquaintances are alive. The only thing that drives him now is a intriguing flyer about a show that might explain “what the hell happened”.

In order to reach the mysterious location, he has to cross the country from south to north. Since all energy-based technology is destroyed, he travels by bicycle. He avoids cities, because the urban areas are patrolled by malevolent soldiers with futuristic outfits. They appear to be on specific research missions, but the only certainty about them is that they open fire on any civilian.

The young man's journey is marked by encounters with few isolated survivors hiding in fear, and travels part of his journey alongside the only normal human being he's met so far, a girl.
