Christopher Webster [Celluloid 12.19.12] drama experimental avant-garde

I'm pretty sure what Terrence Malick is getting at, and has been trying to get at for quite some time, is that everything matters. The things we see, touch, hear and feel and even the invisible things are all part of a larger cosmic puzzle that we puny humans fit into like a perfect if jagged piece.

Whether you feel that it's all spiritual hokum for the sake of masturbatory cinematography, or staggering art is secondary to the fact that Malik has finally said to himself 'fuck it. Fuck trying to stuff my art into narrative filmmaking. Narrative should fight to find a place in my art.'

It's worth noting that Malick's first film, Badlands, will be released by The Criterion Collection for the first time on Blu-ray in March.

Here's what Marina thought of Tree of Life.

To The Wonder stars Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, and Javier Bardem. and is set to open on April 12, 2013.

It seems to me that Malick has finnally reached a point in which he is only capable of imitating himself over and over again.
