Marina Antunes [Celluloid 02.20.13] horror animation

Garrett DeHart is taking a big risk. After two years of working on his graduate thesis film, rather than taking the project to the festival circuit, he's choosing instead to release it online to find more viewership and perhaps make a few connections. It's a bold move and one I hope pays off because If I Am Your Mirror is a major accomplishment. Considering he made it for under $5,000, I'd love to see what he can do with a little more cash.

Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart," If I Am Your Mirror stars the late Larry Holden (best known for his roles in several Christopher Nolan films) as a psychologically scarred Civil War veteran who seeks revenge on a street preacher. The detailed synopsis offers a few more details:

"If I Am Your Mirror"; a short animated film inspired by romantic painting and Edgar Allan Poe. In a post-Civil War jail, a psychologically scarred veteran (Larry Holden of Batman Begins, Memento), awaits his death by hanging at dawn. Mourning the death of his wife and struggling with post-traumatic nightmares, he seeks revenge on the mysterious street preacher with an evil eye. Trapped between madness and a reality that is insane, he recollects what led him to the gallows.

The animation is interesting, sort of like rotoscoping; DeHart shot the film and then developed an animation technique to simulate an animated oil painting. The result is a movie that features some beautiful sequences where the image is washed out like a half remembered dream while the dark passages are like a nightmare you're trying hard to forget. It's a fantastic accomplishment.

More information on the project, including some making of details, available on the official website.
