Marina Antunes [Celluloid 04.18.13] Japan scifi action adventure

You may not remember "Gatchaman" but if you grew up watching cartoons in the late 70s to mid 80s, you're quite likely to remember "Battle of the Planets." The show followed the adventures of G-Force, a team of young people who protect Earth from Zoltar and other crazies who were trying to destroy the planet.

Hugely successful, the show has long been a favourite, even seeing a reboot of sorts in the 2000's but while Warner Brothers attempted to get an animated movie off the ground, a few years ago they finally gave up on the endlessly delayed project but the Japanese have continued to work on their own adaptation.

Director Toya Sato has been tasked with the job of directing the live-action Gatchaman movie and though the first teaser doesn't really show much of the movie I must admit, it's a pretty nifty intro for the upcoming project. Doesn't sound like they were pinching pennies either, it's said that the newly designed, form fitting G-Suits alone cost about $200,000.

The official synopsis for the movie reads:

Set in the near future, Gatchaman follows the story five special agents of the International Science Organization in Tokyo, as they try to protect the world from the mysterious terrorist group who call themselves Galactor. With technology far surpasses that of humans, Galactor has declared war on the entire world and has already subjugated half of it. Trained to draw out the power from the mysterious crystal-like object called a "stone," our five heroes will be called "Gatchaman."

Gatchaman is due for Japanese release on August 24th. Hopefully the international appeal of the anime will mean we'll also get a chance to see the movie. At some point.

So only Gatchaman in name and slightly in costume. Sounds almost totally different otherwise. Oh well still interested I guess.
