We'd already seen a short violent teaser trailer for Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgive which suggested the return of the director's rich color palette and his mix of art and violence and now the trailer for the movie cements what the teaser only hinted at.

Reteaming the director with Ryan Gosling, Only God Forgives takes place in Bangkok where Julian (Gosling) runs a boxing club which is a front for his family's drug smuggling operation. When Julian's brother is killed, his mother flies into town demanding that Julian find the killer and dole out the appropriate revenge.

If the teaser wasn't enough of a glimpse at the sort of action we can expect, the teaser opens with an intense scene which brings flashbacks of the elevator scene in Drive (review). I love the way Refn incorporates violence into his movies; it always feels feral, and the look on Gosling's face as he drags a man down a corridor is exactly that.

Only God Forgives, which also stars Kristen Scott Thomas, opens July 19th.
