quietearth [DVD News 05.22.13] United Kingdom fantasy adventure

Solomon Kane, the fabled swashbuckling Puritan from the mind of Robert E. Howard, is finally hitting Blu-ray on July 16, 2013. The film is now available for pre-order.

Michael J. Bassett's 2adaptation is a dark and brooding affair, made with a fine attention to detail and a true admiration for fantasy. Too bad it took forever to land US distribution, but luckily Anchor Bay/Starz stepped up to the plate.

Though, I'm a little choked to see that Bassett's commentary track, which has appeared on foreign releases, is not present on this disc, I am happy to see this domestic release on Blu.

Synopsis:
The first part in a trilogy series, Solomon Kane is an epic adventure adapted from the classic pulp stories by Robert E. Howard, creator of "Conan the Barbarian." Solomon Kane (James Purefoy) is a 16th Century soldier who learns that his brutal and cruel actions have damned him. Determined to redeem himself, Kane swears to live a life of peace and goodness but is forced to fight once more when a dark power threatens the land.

I think that some find that tone a little bit brooding. A touch languidly paced. I think it oozes atmosphere and the characterization is well done. For the budget, I think it's good.
