Marina Antunes [Celluloid 09.20.13] Canada thriller

For his foray into the Hollywood limelight, Canadian director Denis Villeneuve, best known internationally for his Oscar nominated drama Incendies (review), decided to jump into the fray with not one but two movies. The first, the revenge thriller Prisoners (trailer), opens today after a very successful festival run while the second is a slightly different beast.

Also starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Enemy is an adaptation of José Saramago's 2002 novel "The Double" about a man who discovers his doppelganger and sets out to find out everything he can about him. There are some differences from the novel which was adapted by Javier Gullón and it'll be curious to see how the screenwriter has handled Saramago's material; Saramago was undeniably genius but his work is not exactly straightforward.

One thing is certain, this first teaser looks mighty promising and I expect Villeneuve doesn't hold back on the terror.

Enemies was picked up by A24 Films shortly after its TIFF premiere with a spring platform release planned.
