José Padilha's new take on RoboCop, starring (the soon to be household name) Joel Kinnaman as the titular character, is due out next Friday but there hasn't been much buzz about the movie. That said, a few reactions have been emerging online and they all suggest that while Padilha's movie isn't as violent as Paul Verhoeven's original, it's a pretty great new interpretation of the material.

While we anxiously (or cautiously for some) anticipate the arrival of RoboCop 2014, a group of filmmakers have taken it upon themselves to direct their own version of the movie. Fifty filmmakers, both amateur and professional, chopped up Verhoeven's original and each directed a segment. It's not a direct shot-for-shot remake but, as explained on the project's website, a scene-for-scene remake.

As you might expect from a project like this one, some of the segments are better realized than others but overall, Our RoboCop Remake is a good bit of entertainment with some truly hilarious moments.

That might have been really clever and fun if it had been made by a bunch of 14 year olds, but I didn't even smile once during this mess of infantile adult overindulgence. And this coming from someone who enjoys the infantile overindulgence of Police Squad and Monty Python.
