The Paris Catacombs have been a tourist attraction since the late 19th century. The resting place of nearly six million people, the underground ossuary fills a renovated section of the caverns and tunnels that were historically stone mines. Considering that the walls and crannies of the tunnels are covered in human bones, one would think the tunnels would be ripe for horror movie fodder but As Above, So Below is the first that I’ve seen or heard of.

Directed by John Erick Dowdle of The Poughkeepsie Tapes, Quarantine and Devil fame, and co-written with Drew Dowdle, As Above, So Below follows a group of urban archaeologists as they travel into the tunnels in search of long lost treasure but as expected, what they discover is far from the shinny gold stuff.

I like the concept quite a bit but I’m not keen on the found footage, especially when the setting is so darn cool. There’s a creepy feeling of claustrophobia in the trailer but overall, this doesn’t look particularly promising. That said Dowdle’s previous movies have all been ones which I had little interest in to start with and then ended up enjoying so who knows, maybe he can strike again.

As Above, So Below opens August 15.

I got to tour the Paris catacombs some years ago and it was awesome! It was truly one of the coolest places I've ever been and I recommend it to anyone who visits Paris.

Catacombs(2007) is set in Paris catacombs(the real locations were mainly Bucarest underground tunnels).
