It shouldn't really surprise anyone that Ryan Gosling's first foray behind the camera turns out to be anything but straight forward. Over the course of his career Gosling has been a risk taker in both the stories and directors he invests in and for the most part, his choices have proven to be successful. Now the artist is stepping behind the camera and from the looks of the first clip for Lost River, Gosling has learned a thing or two from the directors he's worked with.

Written and directed by Gosling, the modern day fable stars Christina Hendricks as Billy, a "single mother is swept into a dark underworld, while her teenage son discovers a road that leads him to a secret underwater town." Alongside Hendricks, the movie also stars Saoirse Ronan, Eva Mendes, Iain De Caestecker and former Dr. Who Matt Smith.

Early reviews from the Cannes premiere have been expectedly mixed with comparisons to everyone from Mario Bava to David Lynch and many a note that Gosling has learned much from Nicolas Winding Refn but looking at this first clip, and from the short description above, the other filmmaker that comes instantly to mind is Richard Kelly and as far as I'm concerned, that's a great thing.

Here's hoping the studio gives this a proper release.
