Marina Antunes [Celluloid 07.10.14] Canada thriller

Canadian director Atom Egoyan has not been enjoying a good streak over the last few years and it's getting to the point now where his output of mediocre (or down right terrible) will begin to outweigh the highlights of his career.

The Captive looked like it could be a change of pace for the director whose previous genre entries have left a lot to be desired. Co-written by Egoyan and David Fraser, the movie stars Ryan Reynolds and Mireille Enos as parents whose daughter mysteriously disappears. Eight years later, they begin to see indications that she might still be alive.

Along with Reynolds and Enos, The Captive rounds up an all-star Canadian cast including Scott Speedman, Kevin Durand, Bruce Greenwood, Aaron Poole and the non-Canadian but equally awesome Rosario Dawson.

Festival reviews have been less than favourable but this is looking far better than anything Egoyan has done in years and I must admit, the cast is enough to get me on board though this trailer, a slightly longer version of the Cannes trailer from earlier this year, is rather effective as well.

The Captive opens in Canadian theatres August 5.
