Marina Antunes [Celluloid 07.18.14] horror

Reading the headline from the news release for Cybernatural, the first thing that came to mind was how on earth I'd missed a new movie from Timur Bekmambetov. Turns out he isn't directing this bit of horror, only presenting. But I figure I'll give him the benefit and give this a go.

The story is straight forward: a bullied teen girl kills herself, the bullies feel bad and try to take down the offensive videos but can't because "On the internet, your sins live forever." Seriously, that's the tagline; it might be cheesy but it's also true...

Cybernatural apes Nacho Vigalondo's Open Windows (trailer) in style in that the entire movie appears to be told via computer video screens.

It sounds pretty terrible but the trailer is surprisingly effective which leads me to wonder if first time feature director Levan Gabriadze has actually managed to make this work. The trailer certainly suggests that's the case.

Cybernatural premieres at Fantasia on July 20.
