Marina Antunes [Celluloid 10.27.14] Iran drama vampires arthouse

I was both excited and a bit put off when I first heard about Ana Lily Amirpour's A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. The idea of a movie described as an "Iranian Vampire Western" was awesome but the black and white clips floating around suggested that this might be a distant, artsy and largely uninteresting drama.

Wipe that thought from your mind because Amirpour's movie is far from that.

There's not much of a story to talk about, the movie is about a female vampire that goes around interacting with various people and ends up in a relationship with a nice guy who has some family problems, but the plot is secondary to the movie's atmosphere which oozes out of every frame. It's got a badass cool attitude, the cinematography is gorgeous, it has some amazing western genre influences and it features the best musical moments I've seen in any movie this year. To put it plainly, it's a hell of a good watch.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night opens theatrically November 21.
