Marina Antunes [Celluloid 12.15.14] drama arthouse

If you want to work arthouse movie fans into a frenzy, just tell them that you've given Terrence Malick a couple of GoPro's and told him he should use them in his next movie. Then sit back and watch said fans react to results.

So while not everyone is still on the Malick train, I can't help but be drawn in by the director who, of late, seems completely engrossed with contemplations, sometimes esoteric, of memory, family, relationships and how our upbringing affects the people we become (To the Wonder, Tree of Life (review)).

It hasn't been 10 years in the works but Knight of Cups has been under construction for years. The movie stars Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Brian Dennehy, Antonio Banderas, Freida Pinto, Wes Bentley, Isabel Lucas, Teresa Palmer, Imogen Poots, Armin Mueller-Stahl, and Ben Kingsley with Bale, apparently, in a lead role though to try and pretend that I've glimpsed any sort of plot in this trailer would be a joke. It's a collection of beautiful images, some of them unexpected, and Bale looking like he's losing his mind. And if the trailer feels foreign to begin with, don't worry too much. The second half is far more reminiscent of the Malick we've become accustomed to.

Knigt of Cups will have it's world premiere at Berlinale.

I'm concerned that Malick will never find a way to top The Tree of Life. That would have been a wonderful note on which to retire.
