Radar Pictures announced today that they will produce writer-director Cameron Romero’s ORIGINS. Yep, George Romero's is bringing us a new film set in his father's "Living Dead" universe, taking us back to Vietnam where the dead first rose.

The film’s story is by Romero, who will also direct, with a screenplay by Romero, Darrin Reed and Bryce C. Campbell. The project, which is currently out to cast, was brought into Radar by LaPietra. ORIGINS is scheduled for production later this year.

Synopsis:
At the height of the Cold War when the world held its breath and America was at war with itself, one scientist tried to give the world its best hope for survival. Instead, he unleashed its worst nightmare.

“ORIGINS is a great opportunity for me to continue the family tradition of creating haunting and ever-evolving depictions of the undead, and a great opportunity for Romero fans to see a story of zombie inception never portrayed before.”

This marks another return to the horror genre for Radar, who had great success with the TEXAS CHAINSAW and AMITYVILE HORROR reboots and is currently in post on UNDER THE BED from BLAIR WITCH director Dan Myrick.

Hmm... Wasn't the lack of explanation to the zombie phenomenon one of the creepier elements of Romero's original films? (Unless you count the mention of the Venus probe in 'Night'.) It would be a shame to spoil that mystery by letting his son retro-fit some tired 'crazy scientist' angle onto it.

That said, it's not like George can actually sink much lower after 'Survival', but I always hoped he had one more good film in him.

George's last 3 attempts were horrible with land & Diary but Survival was about as low as it gets. My God was that just a horrible & grab and showed just how bad old George has gotten. Please George the Genre passed you by long, long ago. Just let it go now ! you already pilled 3 HUGE steaming piles of $hit on top of classic trilogy - NO more enough please !

Survival was a particularly naff effort, but I think there are enjoyable moments in Land, and Diary was at least an attempt to do something different, although it really just succeeded in showing Romero's limitations when it comes to writing characters.

Personally, I'd like to see him try something totally different, like he did with Martin, or the Crazies.

Something is better than nothing.

Understand, its always difficult for children to live in their parents shadows. Dealing with the expectations of their parents & their associates.

All that matters ultimately is that he tries. If he enjoys the process all the better because time enjoyed is time well spent. Maybe he will produce good art, we shall see. I hope you are having a wonderful day.

I agree that the origin should be left UNKNOWN .... this will only springboard half a dozen more POS sequels..
