Marina Antunes [Celluloid 03.25.15] Canada horror fantasy

We've been tracking the female revenge thriller Evangeline for a couple of years though it's been a while since we saw anything from the movie other than news that it was playing film festivals here and there but just when I thought we'd never get a chance to see it, in comes an announcement that the movie is headed for release –and soon!

Written and directed by up-and-coming Canadian horror maven Karen Lam, Evangeline stars Kat de Lieva as the titular character, a college girl who falls for violent fraternity leader Michael (Richard Harmon of "Continuum" and "The 100" fame). He and some friends have their way with Evangeline and dump her in the woods to die. It's here that she comes into contact with a supernatural entity that spurs her into exacting her revenge on her abusers.

Evangeline looks like it features some great performances and I'm a fan of Lam's, a writer/director that manages to infuse her movies with social commentary without hitting you over the head with it.

Evangeline will be available on VOD May 8 and on DVD June 9.
