Marina Antunes [Celluloid 03.02.15] thriller

By now you've probably heard that Damien Chazelle's Whiplash is pretty great and that J.K. Simmons is terrifyingly brilliant in it. What you may not have gathered from the trailers is that the movie is a solid thriller that gets deep at the psychology not only of music but people who strive for perfection. It's relentless and down right scary in part because of Simmons and in part because of what it shows us about human nature.

You should really check it out (it's now available on blu-ray) but if you're curious about what you're getting yourself into, Chazelle's short film, also titled Whiplash, from which the feature was derived, is now online. Not only is it a pretty great short in its own right with Simmons as the band teacher, it's a great preview of the movie which digs into the psychological depths the short just hints at.
