Marina Antunes [Celluloid 04.14.15] horror thriller

It is a good time for indie horror and as a bonus, it's an even better time to be a woman starring in indie horror which has, over the last few years, emerged as a great place for actresses to take a lead as more than just beauties in distress. The latest title on the docket: Sun Choke.

Sarah Hagan stars as Janie, a young woman who, under the care of her lifelong nanny Irma, is recovering from a psychotic break. All seems to be going well until Janie is allowed to leave the house. She quickly becomes obsessed with another woman, an obsession that veers her off the road to recovery and plummets the three women into a heap of trouble.

Not only is the trailer for Sun Choke beautiful, the movie looks like a descent into psychological turmoil. It likely won't end well but for lovers of thrillers, it sure makes for entertaining yarn and director Ben Cresciman seems on track to deliver.

Sun Choke will have world premiere at the Stanley Film Festival in May.
