Marina Antunes [Celluloid 06.23.15] post apocalyptic thriller



Ten years ago, author Elizabeth McClung made a big splash with "Zed." Her post apocalyptic thriller about a pre-teen girl named Zed surviving in a harsh new reality, was named one of the best books of the year by The Globe and Mail and won numerous awards. In 2009, the project was optioned by Matthew Cervi's Vancouver based Mad Samurai Productions but little has been heard of the project since then.


Today, as if this were breaking news, Playback has announced that Cervi will be producing the movie.


Described as a riff on J.G. Ballard's "High Rise" or Iain Banks' "The Wasp Factory," the book's synopsis reads:

Zed is having a bad day. She's twelve and there's someone around who's killing kids, which she doesn't have time for. Today, she's already knifed a rapist, traded with half the drunks and addicts in town, talked to the dead, bargained with a sociopath, and extracted crucial information from a mental patient-and she hasn't even left the building.

Welcome to the Tower, an urban development project no city wants to lay claim to; a place to steer clear of if at all possible, but if you can't, you'll fit right in.



The re-announcement of the fact that the property has been optioned is likely a good indication that the long dormant project is finally moving ahead. This doesn't surprise too much considering Cervi has had good run of projects over the last few years including the sci-fi thriller Cruel & Unusual (trailer) and the PA action thriller The Colony (review) not to mention the fact that YA properties are still hot commodities.
