Marina Antunes [Celluloid 06.30.15] thriller mystery

The remake train continues to churn along in Hollywood and this time, the powers that be are taking on the 2009 Spanish thriller The Secret in Their Eyes which, upon its theatrical release in North America, made a big splash raking in a nice chunk of change and landing the movie on IMDb's top 250. All of this to say that the original is not some festival favourite few have seen.

The remake is being toted as more of a fresh take on Eduardo Sacheri's novel (which was also the basis for the first movie) about a team of FBI investigators whose lives are turned upside down they're called to a murder scene and discover the body of a teenage girl who happens to be the daughter of one of the investigators.

Writer/director Billy Ray is not prolific but his previous directing credits, Shattered Glass and Breach, are both great thrillers and he has a track record of writing great material (from Suspect Zero to Captain Phillips) - quality is better than quanity. He's assembled a crack team of actors here including Dean Norris, Nicole Kidman, Michael Kelly, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Julia Roberts as the detective whose daughter is killed.

The Secret in Their Eyes may well turn out to be a generic thriller but it looks like there may be more just below the surface which is promising. We'll see how well it fares when it opens October 23.
