Christopher Webster [Celluloid 08.20.15] scifi action thriller fantasy adventure

Luc Besson has cast Clive Owen to star alongside Dane DeHaan (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) and Cara Delavingne (Paper Towns) in his ambitious $180 Million sci-fi flick, Valerian. The film is based on a French comic series from writers Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières that first appeared in 1967. Owen will play a character called "Commander Arün Filitt".

Believe it or not, The film is set to begin shooting early 2016. According to Deadline, the French auteur showed a select group of people some early production art that wowed the crap out of them:

"There are only five major human characters and dozens of crazy-looking creatures, and we hear he's already clearing space in his Paris studio because he's going to need all the soundstages. Besson didn't reveal the film's plot, only the world he is building, and it looked exquisite. He told us that he thought he had the script ready several years ago, but tore it up after watching Avatar and realizing he had a lot more work to do. Now, he is ready."

As a fan of Besson's and seeing what he was able to do with the Fifth Element, I'm pretty excited to see another insane, European space opera. But for every Fifth Element, there is a Jupiter Ascending.

More as it comes, folks!

That last line is interesting/scary, "...he thought he had the script ready several years ago, but tore it up after watching Avatar and realizing he had a lot more work to do."
