John Connor [Celluloid 10.14.15] United Kingdom horror thriller

Here's an odd discovery that has my curiosity peaked. The Boy is a creepy new UK film from William Brent Bell (The Devil Inside) that stars Lauren Cohan, who most will recognize from AMC's The Walking Dead, as the unknowing caregiver of a life-sized porcelain doll. The doll's owners have very specific rules that must be maintained, because if they're not... look out!

Of course, The Devil Inside was a critical disaster, but I won't hold that against Bell just yet. That film was handheld for one thing, while The Boy feels much more traditional and classy. So far, I like what I'm seeing here.

Greta (Cohan) is a young American woman who takes a job as a nanny in a remote English village, only to discover that the family’s 8-year-old is a life-sized doll that the parents care for just like a real boy, as a way to cope with the death of their actual son 20 years prior.

After violating a list of strict rules, a series of disturbing and inexplicable events bring Greta’s worst nightmare to life, leading her to believe that the doll is actually alive.

STX Entertainment will distribute the movie nationwide on January 22, 2016.
