Marina Antunes [Celluloid 11.02.15] thriller

Like every other horror movie trope, the bad babysitter isn't exactly new fodder but something about the trailer for Michael Thelin's feature film debut Emelie suggests that this might be better than your average horror movie by focusing more on the thriller and suspense angle of the story rather than the kills.

The set-up is pretty basic: a family's regular babysitter can't make the job so the family hire's the sitter's good friend to cover for the night. Everything seems to be going swimmingly, except for the fact that the babysitter seems to be hitting on the eldest son, until a game of hide-and-seek turns ugly and Emelie, the replacement sitter, seems to lose her mind.

I love the creep-factor of the trailer and I've really enjoyed Sarah Bolger's performances to date and must admit I'm looking forward to see her in a leading capacity.

Emelie has screened a bit under the radar at a few festivals including Tribeca. It's been picked up by MPI Media Group which will distribute the movie in early spring 2016 via its Dark Sky Films banner.
