Marina Antunes [Celluloid 11.19.15] drama fantasy

We're over a year away from the release of A Monster Calls but that's not stopping the studio from giving us a first glimpse at their upcoming fantasy.

Adapted by Patrick Ness from his best selling, award winning children's novel, the movie stars Lewis MacDougall as Connor, a young boy dealing with his mother's illness and school bullies by escaping into a world with a tree monster – among other creatures.

I've never read or seen any part of the book but this production is promising for a number of reasons including a supporting cast which includes Sigourney Weaver, Felicity Jones, Toby Kebbell and Liam Neeson but mostly because of director J.A. Bayona who was responsible for The Orphanage a few years ago and most recently the excellent disaster movie The Impossible. He's proven great at mixing visual effects with powerful storytelling and I don't doubt the same is true here though the teaser doesn't really suggest anything beyond hinting at some dark fantasy to come.

A Monster Calls is due October 14, 2016.
