Marina Antunes [Celluloid 12.23.15] Mexico thriller drama

Jonás Cuarón is best known for his work co-writing Gravity with his father Alfonso Cuarón. But the younger Cuarón is a director in his own right with a couple of shorts under his belt, including the fantastic Gravity companion short Aningaaq (watch here), as well as a full length feature. For his sophomore effort Desierto, Jonás Cuarón tackles the thriller.

The movie stars Gael García Bernal as a Mexican migrant crossing illegally into the United States via the desert except that partway through the already perilous journey, he and his group are attacked by a vigilante border patroller (played here by Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

The trailer suggests Desierto will be an intense watch with a back and forth where the hunter becomes the hunted and where it's not only a case of surviving the hunter but the elements as well.

Desierto opens March 4th.
