Marina Antunes [Celluloid 12.17.15] action fantasy adventure

So here's what you don't do in an effort to rebound from terrible reception of your debut trailer: you don't release a trailer that tones down the zany and accentuates the boring. It's too late to convince people that your movie isn't batshit crazy so why bother trying to hide it?

Lionsgate has been on cleanup mode since the backlash over the release of the first bits of promo material for Alex Proyas' Gods of Egypt and the vitriol was so damning that both the studio and the director publicly apologised for the whitewashing.

Frankly, I think that's only a small part of the problem with this movie which, as this new trailer suggests, is going to be rubbish. I mean, I love Proyas as much as the next girl but even I have to concede that this looks like he's hit rock bottom. You take all the crazy out of the first trailer and you're left with... snoozefest.

I said before that I had no interest in this but I lied. I secretly hope that Proyas is playing a big intricate prank on us and the movie is so secretly awesome it will melt our eyeballs. I hope but I'm not holding my breath.

Gods of Egypt opens February 26.

Recommended Release: Jupiter Ascending
