Christopher Webster [Celluloid 01.05.16] cult drama

Indie wonderkind Xavier Dolan has lashed out at Netflix for streaming his acclaimed film, Mommy, in the improper aspect ratio, imposing a 1:85:1, widescreen presentation for parts of the film that were designed to appear 1:1.

I've ranted about Netflix's practice of altering the aspect ratios of film before, but while it's annoying to viewers, I can't imagine how frustrating it must be fore a filmmaker who is striving to achieve a very specific vision.

Dolan lashed out with an open letter to Netflix which you can read below. The letter severely reprimands Netflix for their decision, the best part of which is:

"You did not direct this movie. You did not write this movie. You did not produce this movie. So can anyone or anything except me warrant the liberty you took upon my work? No."

As usual, it seems the artist and the actual work has been too easily forgotten by the business side of the industry. Netflix is nothing with the films they acquire, and yet they insist on viewing it all as "content" and not deliberate art. Shameful.
