Marina Antunes [Celluloid 02.11.16] scifi thriller drama dystopic

Last year, around the time of the movie's festival premiere, we had our first look at Drake Doremus' upcoming Equals.

Set in a dystopian future, the movie stars Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult as two would be lovers in a world where emotions have been eradicated and love is non-existent. On paper, Equals sounds like it falls somewhere between Huxley's "Brave New World" and Equilibrium but I expect that the story, penned by Moon scribe Nathan Parker, will bring something unique to the table. The all around pedigree here is generally quite high.

Stewart and Hoult have both proven themselves to be talented young actors with great depth and Doremus has positioned himself as a brilliant storyteller of unique relationship stories (both Like Crazy and Breathe In are highly recommended). It's also great to see Guy Pearce, who has worked with Doremus in the past, return to work with the director again.

The trailer offers up a stylish future which we had already seen in the stills, and a largely wordless suggestion of the story. It's not much but this is shaping into a really promising package.

US distributor A24 has yet to announce a release date but Equals is expected to arrive this summer.

Recommended Release: Equilibrium
