Christopher Webster [Celluloid 03.17.16] post apocalyptic apocalyptic scifi horror thriller

Just quickly, I finally caught up with the Duffer Brothers' new post-apocalyptic thriller Hidden and absolutely loved it. The film is about a family, played by Alexander Skarsgård, Andrea Riseborough and child actor Emily Alyn Lind, who hole up in an underground bunker when a mysterious event occurs in their small mountain town. The film is gritty and mysterious, but also emotional and held together by three flat out great performances.

Before debuting with Hidden for Warner Bros, The Duffer's previously penned some episodes of the Lynchian Wayward Pines, so that gives you an idea of the kind of storytelling that interests them. since Hidden premiered, Netflix has aquired their show Stranger Things which premieres later in 2016.

Hidden starts off underground and eases us into its scenario by focusing on the family dynamic first. Skarsgård is the loving-to-a-fault father while Andrea Riseborough is the overprotective mother. There are rules in the bunker, laid down by the parents to keep everyone from freaking out. It's a dark and tight environment, shot in a sickly yellow that makes you feel more than a little uneasy.

But don't worry. As soon as you start to get concerned that the full proceedings will be either slow, or relegated entirely to the cramped underground quarters, we're fed flashbacks and new information that starts a near perfectly executed mystery that concludes in a very satisfying way.

Hidden comes highly recommended to anyone hankering for another bunker flick after watching 10 Cloverfield Lane (review).

Avoid spoilers and dive into this hidden pleasure.
