Marina Antunes [Celluloid 03.30.16] horror fantasy

I was already pretty excited at the prospects for Pearry Teo's new movie - the image gallery for The Curse of Sleeping Beauty is nothing short of spectacular – and now that I've seen the trailer, I really can't wait.

A modern take on the classic story of sleeping beauty, Teo's version brings the classic tale into the present and throws in some macabre horror to spice things up.

The movie introduces Thomas, a young man who inherits a mansion from an uncle only to discover that the ancestral home and his entire family is plagued by a curse dating back to the Crusades.

Thomas enlists the help of Natalie Hall and the great Bruce Davison to solve the mystery of the curse while also working to wake up Briar Rose (India Eisley), the sleeping beauty that is being held captive in a netherworld which he's seen in his dreams and which appears to be accessible through this new house he's inherited.

The trailer for The Curse of Sleeping Beauty plays a bit too heavily like a typical horror movie but having liked a number of Teo's previous projects and loving so many of the visuals we've seen to date, many of which also appear in the trailer, I can't help but get excited at the prospect.

Though we're still awaiting details on the type of release, The Curse of Sleeping Beauty will be available May 13.
