Christopher Webster [Celluloid 04.18.16] Russia scifi action adventure

I was talking recently with Nikolai Pigarev, director of Russia's first zombie movie, Winter of the Dead, and he was telling me to expect Russia to double down on big superhero movies in the coming years.

I wasn't surprised to hear it. Russia's commercial film industry is ramping up and a new generation of directors is looking to break away from the old guard -- but, boy, this came out fast!

During the Cold War, a secret organization named “Patriot” gathered a group of Soviet superheroes, altering and augmenting the DNA of four individuals, in order to defend the homeland from supernatural threats. The group includes representatives of the different nationalities of the Soviet Union, and they have long been hiding their true identities. With hard times at hand, they settle down to business and gather to defend their homeland.

Guardians is directed by Sarik Andreasyan and stars Anton Pampushniy, Sanzhar Madiev, Sebastien Sisak, Alina Lanina, Valeria Shkirando, Vyacheslav Razbegaev, and Stanislav Shirin.

It has a release date of 23 February 2017 in Russia. Here's hoping someone picks it up for domestic distro.

Their first zombie film came out two years ago. Now they're doing superheroes. How timely! What, is Russia the christian rock of cinema?

Might actually be good. 4 superheros against the on-coming darkness [the evil West?]. Unfortunately I feel like I just watched a minute and 18 seconds of Russian propaganda, not a trailer for a fun popcorn movie....
