Marina Antunes [Celluloid 05.25.17] thriller crime



Actor-turned-writer Taylor Sheridan made a big splash with the one-two punch of writing both Sicario and Hell or High Water which is, arguably, one of the best heist movies in a few years.


Now Sheridan is flexing his directing muscle but moving pretty far from the rather terrible horror movie he made nearly a decade ago and staying more in line with his recent fascination with crime thrillers: Wind River.


The Sundance and Cannes selected title is written and directed by Sheridan and stars Jeremy Renner as a game tracker who finds the body of a teenage girl on a Native Reservation in the far north. Elizabeth Olsen plays Jane Banner, an FBI agent sent in to investigate the homicide which appears to affect everyone in town. The movie also co-stars Graham Greene, Gil Birmingham and Hugh Dillon.



Early reviews suggest this isn't quite en par with Hell or High Water but that bar was set pretty high. The trailer suggests a fairly straightforward thriller with a unique setting which appears to play a fairly major role in the storytelling. Will that be enough to satisfy? We'll find out soon enough.


Wind River opens August 4.

I like Sheridans work. I look forward to next Sicario film.

I had a bit of a problem with Sicario - the Emily Blunt character is set up as the protagonist, but she is just there to enable the CIA guy to be involved. So the character set up as protagonist has no role in the conclusion of the film. I'm all for breaking conventions, but that just did not work for me.

I thought her frustration with her essential powerlessness (which is basically as you described) was meant to illustrate the many frustrations of the war on drugs. *shrug* Anyway, it worked for me.
