Marina Antunes [Celluloid 07.18.17] action thriller drama

On paper the description for Alpha doesn't exactly sound like the most exciting of movies but the first trailer for the Albert Hughes directed action adventure suggests some great things to come.

Starring Kodi Smit-McPhee, the movie unfolds in 20,000 BC - during the last Ice Age. Smit-McPhee plays a boy who is left for dead by his clan after a hunting accident. He survives, makes friends with a wolf and the pair go on an adventure in search of the boy's family. As previously noted, this doesn't exactly sound thrilling but just go with it for a moment...

Hughes, one half of The Hughes Brothers who last brought us the excellent The Book of Eli, isn't exactly making cookie-cutter movies and if this first trailer is any indication, it looks like we may have a silent action movie on our hands. Plus Smit-McPhee is a talented young actor and the effects here are shaping up nicely.

Alpha could certainly tip either way but the first trailer is looking promising.

Jeff Robinov certainly needs a hit. This is the second movie to be released by his Studio 8 shingle. The former Warner Brothers head made some big promises when he announced the new studio but hasn't managed to deliver. Yet.

Alpha opens March 2, 2018.
