Marina Antunes [Celluloid 12.10.18] scifi action

Godzilla is back in a really big way. Admittedly, it's never really gone away but over the last few years, it seems that the famous monster has been making more appearances than usual.

Since the Gareth Edwards release in 2014, we've had the excellent Godzilla: Planet of Monsters (trailer), Shin Godzilla, Godzilla Resurgence (trailer) and now another live-action release from Hollywood: Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Michael Dougherty (Trick 'r Treat) is onboard to direct the latest entry into the English-language Godzilla movies. This new entry pits Godzilla against a number of other prehistoric monsters including favourites Mothra, Rodan and the three-headed King Ghidorah.

The movie stars Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown ("Stranger Things"), Sally Hawkins, Charles Dance, Ken Watanabe and Thomas Middleditch.

I really liked Edward's approach to Godzilla which focused more on the human story with the monster as more of a background character. I also realize I'm in the minority when it comes to that, generally, people want to see the monsters when they go into a Godzilla movie and Godzilla: King of the Monsters certainly looks like it will deliver.

I love this cast but this feels like it'll just be another "giant monsters fighting it out' movie which is likely to have more general appeal but which I find far less interesting.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters opens May 31.
