Marina Antunes [Celluloid 01.07.19] action thriller

You can't pin down Mads Mikkelsen. The Danish actor bounces around genres and languages like it's all perfectly natural to him and in addition to starring in a Cannes selected thriller due for release later this year, he'll be kicking some major ass in a comic book adaptation later this month.

Adapted from the webseries and graphic novels from writer and illustrator Víctor Santos, Polar stars Mikkelsen Duncan Vizla, a retired international hitman who comes out of retirement to hunt down a group of young hitmen who have been tasked with permanently retiring Vizla. Along with Mikkelsen, the movie also stars Katheryn Winnick, Matt Lucas, and Vanessa Hudgens who plays a drug user who somehow works her way into Vizla's circle.

The comic is notable for its action, noir influence and gore and it appears that the movie, directed by Jonas Åkerlund (Spun), has plenty of that to go around but the real selling point is Mikkelsen who is always fantastic regardless of the quality of the movie or, for that matter, the character. Thankfully, it seems that in this case, the material seems to match the performance.

Polar will be available on Netflix January 25.
