Marina Antunes [Celluloid 07.31.19] horror comedy

It's the year of the zombie comedy. First there was Jim Jarmusch's The Dead Don't Die (review), then there's Zombieland: Double Tap (trailer) coming in October with yet a third to follow: Little Monsters.

Written and directed by Abe Forsythe, Little Monsters stars Lupita Nyong'o as Miss Caroline, a daycare leader taking a group of children to a petting zoo but when a zombie outbreak begins, she finds herself protecting said children from the flesh-eaters - alongside a washed-up musician, played by Stephen Peacocke, and a kids show personality, played by Josh Gad, who reluctantly joins the fray.

It looks and sounds completely ridiculous and Forsythe and his cast clearly recognize that and it comes through in the trailer. It's that tongue-in-cheek approach that makes Little Monsters look promising. Here's hoping there's more to this than the gags on display in the trailer.

Little Monsters opens in the UK November 15. Neon has US right but no release date as of yet.

Recommended Release: Warm Bodies
