Marina Antunes [Celluloid 01.13.20] thriller crime



A woman, acting in self-defence, accidentally kills a man. In a panicked moment, she decides its in her and her son's best interest to hide the murder but her decision weighs heavy.


She's torn between her own self-interest and the knowledge that if she buries this secret, the man's family will forever wonder what happened. This inner drama is at the centre of Blood on Her Name, the debut feature from Matthew Pope.


The film stars Bethany Anne Lind ("Ozark," "Stranger Things," "Doom Patrol") as Leigh Tiller, the garage owner at the centre of this moral drama which also co-stars Will Paton as her estranged father.


Blood on Her Name had its world premiere at Fantasia last year before making its US debut at Beyond Fest.



While Blood on Her Name does have a crime thriller plot that involves Leigh and her estranged police officer father with a long history of moral compromise, co-writers Pope and Don M. Thompson, seem far more focused on the psychology of Leigh's decision to hide the body and what that means for her and the dead man's family.


Movies that play within the grey areas of morality are usually the most interesting but the first teaser for the movie also suggests that Blood on Her Name is really well made and with both Lind and Paton, two great actors, I expect the movie will be well worth a look.


Blood on Her Name opens theatrically and will be available on VOD February 28.

I saw this one in Fantasia. It is excellent. The ending was a bit bleak. But, a great film about family, conflict and a few other things I can't remember.
