Marina Antunes [Celluloid 03.10.20] Ireland (Republic of) horror cult thriller drama

Polish director Malgorzata Szumowska has been on a tear over the last few years with a succession of projects recently completed or currently in production. One of those films is The Other Lamb, a drama with overtones of horror that made the festival rounds late last year after a premiere at TIFF.

Raffey Cassidy (known for roles in The Killing of a Sacred Deer and Vox Lux), stars as Selah, a young woman born into an all-female cult, living a secluded life unstuck from time, in a compound hidden deep in the woods. The group is led by Shepherd (Michiel Huisman), a charismatic leader, and only man some of the young women have ever known, who controls the group with a quiet power. As Selah approaches womanhood, she begins to see terrifying visions that unhinge her and the seemingly perfect world she inhabits.

Written by noted TV screenwriter C.S. McMullen, The Other Lamb has all the trappings of a great cult drama: likeable but questionable leader, supportive but mysterious members, fascinating world-building. Add to the mix captivating leads in Cassidy and Huisman, gorgeous cinematography from Michal Englert, all under the leadership of a talented director, and you have yourself a must-see thriller.

The Other Lamb opens theatrically and will be available on VOD April 3.
