Marina Antunes [Celluloid 08.06.20] horror drama

While I can appreciate the (mad) genius of Charlie Kaufman, I also find much of his work to be dense and mostly inaccessible. His mind certainly works in a unique way and frankly, most of the time the stories simply don't strike for me but that's definitely not the case with his latest I'm Thinking of Ending Things.

Kaufman's latest stars Jessie Buckley as the "Girlfriend" who is thinking of ending the relationship with her boyfriend Jake, played by Jesse Plemons. But she hasn't done it yet and instead, finds herself on a road trip, in the middle of a snowstorm, to meet Jake's parents for the first time. Enter Toni Collette and David Thewlis looking absolutely mad. Everything about Jake's parents is a bit off and soon, the Girlfriend starts to think she's going mad; or perhaps just seeing what Jake's parents really look like.

It's Kaufman so perhaps it's all of this plus more.

Admittedly, one of the reasons I'm most excited to see I'm Thinking of Ending Things is because of this cast but the horror overtones of Kaufman's latest mind-bender is also tweaking my interest.

Not long to wait now. I'm Thinking of Ending Things will be streaming on Netflix starting September 4.

It's not an enjoyable movie. I suffered through twenty minutes and had to turn it off.
