Marina Antunes [Celluloid 11.09.20] horror

The trailer for Braden R. Duemmler's feature film debut What Lies Beneath is exactly the kind of thing that piques my interest in a movie. It's a little bit of a bait and switch but one that generally proves to be fairly effective.

Ema Horvath stars as Liberty, a teenager returning home from summer camp to find that her mom, played by Mena Suvari, has not only found herself a boyfriend but an almost too perfect fiance. Clearly, there's something not right about a man that appears to be perfect. Cue the drama but what first appears to be a creepy dad-to-be movie quickly turns into what appears to be a monster horror.

The movie also stars Trey Tucker as the "too perfect to be good" soon-to-be dad.

I love a good, subversive movie and What Lies Beneath seems to be doing just that, in part a movie about a teenager who may just have a crush on her new step-dad, a movie about how men who are too-good-to-be-true probably are, and a monster movie to top it all off.

What Lies Beneath will be available on digital and on demand on December 4.
