Ben Wheatley is back and he appears to be in as fine a form as ever.

His latest foray into the horrific is In the Earth which stars Joel Fry as Martin, a researcher whose area of study is finding ways to grow crops more efficiently. For reasons which aren't disclosed in the trailer, he decides to do at least part of his research in the forest.

And so Martin travels to a facility on the edge of a forest that, from the onset, sounds like a creepy place to spend time: no GPS, a group went missing in there not long ago, and to make matters worse, the locals believe the place is guarded by a forest spirit. As you might imagine coming from Wheatley, things are about to get much worse for Martin and his guide Olivia (Hayley Squires).

It's been a few years since I saw one of Wheatley's movies, the last being Free Fire (review) but it looks like Wheatley is clearly back into the wild and weird that make his more popular offerings so memorable. This one seems to mix everything from creepy backwoods horror, gruesome body horror, and who knows what else.

I'm not sure I'm ready but bring it on!

In the Earth opens threatically on April 23.

I can't say I've actually liked ANY of Wheatley's movies, but I keep coming back. The premises are always great, but the movies are... just OK. I will watch In The Earth, but I fully expect to be disappointed again.

Apparently he's also directing "The Meg 2", which I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around.

I noticed that as well. I didn't realize they were doing a sequel. Should be... interesting.
