The first Russian theatrical trailer for Oleg Stepchenko's Viy 3D - which stars Jason Flemyng and Charles Dance - has been added to YouTube.
Here's a synopsis for Viy 3D from the production: "A dark secret lies hidden in the depths of the thick, impenetrable forests of Transylvania. Only one man can unravel its mystery, the fearless scientist and explorer Jonathan Green (played by Jason Flemyng, and inspired by historical figure Guillaume le Vasseur de Beauplan). ¶ As a cartographer, Jonathan set out from England at the start of the 18th century on a journey to the mysterious, unmapped lands, and onwards across the globe. One of the first men to measure and map the Earth's circumference, he realizes he's hopelessly lost while passing through the outer reaches of Transylvania. ¶ As he runs out of food and fuel, Jonathan struggles deep into the forest. Confused finally by a thick fog, he stumbles across a small, unheard of strange settlement deep in as yet unmapped territory. ¶ Green has come across the local inhabitants, whom he takes to be similar to pirates. He asks himself the question, 'What would pirates be doing on dry land so far from the seas and oceans, lost so deeply in the thick forests?' And he begins to understand that the answers will reveal a remarkable secret. ¶ Pragmatic and empiric, scientist Jonathan Green dares to solve the mystery and discover the truth behind the secret. First he learns of the mysterious murder of the village lord's daughter, then he encounters an ancient, mythical creature that has come to life in the minds and souls of the impressionable villagers. ¶ The creature is widely known in local folklore as Viy, a huge merciless monster conjured up from the ancient tales of Slavic legend - a monster that devours its prey, ravages young women, and steals the souls of all whom it encounters eye to eye..."
According to The Hollywood Reporter article "Cannes: Universal Takes 'Viy 3D' For Russia" (May 14, 2013), "Universal is planning a huge release for the film, setting to put Viy 3D out on more than 2,300 prints in Russia and the CIS territories, the equivalent of a Hollywood tentpole."
