Mission:Erebus Part I

Postby iamdavidbyrne » Wed Nov 12, 2008 11:49 am

Thank you everyone for your comments on "Seven Segment". I wanted to keep the fan fiction section still going, so I am going to post another screenplay that I have written. I wrote this one about a year before "Seven Segment". "Mission:Erebus" is a sci-fi horror film with zombies about the rugged and troubled, Captain Daniels and the crew of the cargo ship the Aeneid who are forced by a tyrannical general to accept a new mission of covering up the deadly aftermath of a secret war on the uncharted planet Erebus. I drew inspiration from James Cameron's films "Alien" and "The Abyss" and mixed in "28 Days Later". I hope I don't catch hell for creating fast moving zombies, but I felt in this story the faster moving zombies were much more effective for building suspense and terror. And just in case anyone didn't know Erebus is the son of the Greek primordial god, Chaos, and represented the personification of darkness and shadow, which filled in all the corners and crannies of the world. Well here is the first installment, and once again I appreciate your feedback and comments, it serves to help make me a better writer... and hopefully one day get these stories produced. Thanks.

MISSION:EREBUS

FADE IN:

EXT. PLANET EREBUS - NIGHT

In the year 2188, war wages on Erebus, a dark and desolate
planet where harsh winds blow over barren deserts.

SOLDIERS clad in heavily armored military suits fire their
futuristic guns at the opposition as their units try to
advance further into enemy territory.

Neither side seems to have the upper hand, as small
explosions and traces of gunfire light the night sky.

JIMMY, a soldier, fires his gun and then runs toward enemy
lines. He sees a boulder and runs toward it for cover, but
he is shot in the chest while running.

His body spins around landing harshly on the red dirt.

CLIFF, another soldier, sees Jimmy go down. He throws a
grenade towards enemy lines then runs towards the fallen
soldier.

Cliff reaches down and grabs Jimmy by the collar and drags
him behind the boulder as enemy fire quickly chips away at
the edges of the large rock.

He situates himself against the rock and tries to help Jimmy
sit up.

CLIFF
Jimmy, come on, Jimmy. Talk to me.

It is no use. The shot was fatal, and Jimmy dies in Cliff's
arms on the battlefield.

CLIFF (cont'd)
Jimmy!

Cliff lays him back down, and fires a couple of rounds off
towards the enemy.

He yells into his walkie-talkie.

CLIFF (cont'd)
We're taking fire everywhere! We
have soldiers down. We need air
strikes, now!

The soldier manages to get a couple of quick shots off before
hunkering back down behind the boulder and waiting for
reinforcements.

INT. HELICOPTER 686 - NIGHT

A HELICOPTER PILOT wearing a faceless dark helmet hovers
silently in the air.

CHOPPER PILOT
(emotionless)
Chopper 686, standing by for
command.

INT. SATELLITE COMMAND CENTER - NIGHT

The command center is an extremely dark room lit only by the
glare and flicker of several computer and surveillance video
screens. There are FIVE UNIFORMED MEN present in the command
center. Two are easily distinguished as high-ranking
officers. One of these men is GENERAL ERICKSON who stands
rigid and cold leaning slightly against a railing as he
intently monitors the ongoing warfare.

The second high-ranking officer in the command center is 1ST
LIEUTENANT CRENSHAW who does not appear as cold as Erickson,
but still carries a strong demeanor.

Crenshaw marches towards the General.

CRENSHAW
Sir, we are prepared to send the
choppers.

The General continues to stare.

CRENSHAW (cont'd)
Sir...

Undisturbed, the General continues to stare straight ahead as
panicked transmissions filter in through the speakers.

CLIFF (O.C.)
The enemy is advancing. Repeat,
the enemy is advancing. Where are
those choppers!

CRENSHAW
Sir, it's time to send the
choppers.

General Erickson stands up straight.

ERICKSON
Initiate Red Alpha.

Crenshaw is taken back by the order.

CRENSHAW
Sir, the choppers are ready and
standing by for our order. We can
send them in and give our men a
foothold on the ground floor.

ERICKSON
A foothold's not going to win this
war, Lieutenant.

CRENSHAW
You are correct; a foothold is not
going to win this war, but the
continued strategic advancement of
our troops will win this fight.

ERICKSON
Initiate Red Alpha.

Crenshaw steps back looking horrified.

CRENSHAW
Sir, what do you plan on doing?

ERICKSON
We were sent here to secure the
mineral rights for our country at
all cost. I'm doing what I was
ordered to do.

CRENSHAW
We were not sent here to sacrifice
the lives of those men down there.

The General turns towards Crenshaw.

ERICKSON
Initiate Red Alpha.

CRENSHAW
Sir, I cannot do that. I'm sending
the choppers.

Crenshaw steps away from the General and towards the other
men in the room. 1ST PRIVATE STEVENS, a computer tech, sits
on front of a large radar screen flanked by two other
computer techs, PRIVATE DRUMMOND and PRIVATE MARTIN.

CRENSHAW (cont'd)
Stevens, send the command to the
choppers.

General Erickson quickly draws his gun and points it directly
at the back of Lieutenant Crenshaw's head.

ERICKSON
Lieutenant, you will obey an order!

Crenshaw stops dead in his tracks as Stevens and the other
men slowly back away.

ERICKSON (cont'd)
Turn around, Lieutenant.

Crenshaw slowly turns towards General Erickson who has not
let down his gun.

ERICKSON (cont'd)
Now I gave an order. Initiate Red
Alpha.

CRENSHAW
Sir, I cannot do it. Red Alpha
will not only kill our enemies, but
it will kill every single one of
our men.

ERICKSON
Are you saying you can't or are you
saying you won't.

CRENSHAW
I won't.

General Erickson fires his gun without shuttering an ounce of
emotion as Lieutenant Crenshaw's body falls limp towards the
ground.

ERICKSON
Is anyone else going to disobey an
order?

The other men stare in disbelief as to what just happened.

ERICKSON (cont'd)
Good... Private Stevens, give the
orders to commence Red Alpha.

Stevens returns to his command post and puts his headphones
and microphone back on. He turns towards the computer
screen.

He situates the microphone directly in front of his mouth.

STEVENS
(voice shaking)
Lone Squadron Elite. Repeat. Lone
Squadron Elite. Initiate Red
Alpha. Initiate Red Alpha.

Stevens lets out a gigantic sigh and then hangs his head in
shame of what he just did.

The rest of the men closely monitor the surveillance video.

General Erickson slowly moves towards his original position
and once again resumes looking at the situation on the
battlefield.

EXT. PLANET EREBUS - NIGHT

From a remote sector on Erebus a wingless craft takes off
from a stand still. It continues to increase its elevation
to a point just under cloud level.

The craft darts forward with alarming speed and silence
towards the battlefield.

The craft passes over the head of Chopper 686.

INT. HELICOPTER 686 - NIGHT

The chopper pilot stares up at the wingless craft.

CHOPPER PILOT
What the hell?

The pilot quickly turns on his radio.

CHOPPER PILOT (cont'd)
This Chopper 686. We have an
unidentified craft in restricted
airspace. Waiting for command.

STEVENS (O.C.)
All choppers stand down. Repeat.
All choppers stand down. Return to
base.

The pilot shrugs his shoulders.

CHOPPER PILOT
Copy that, Command Center.
Standing down.

EXT. HELICOPTER 686 - NIGHT

Chopper 686 turns around and heads out into the night.

EXT. WINGLESS CRAFT - NIGHT

The wingless craft reaches a point high over the battlefield.

EXT. PLANET EREBUS - NIGHT

The bay doors on the underbelly of the craft open up where a
large aerodynamic bomb ominously looms.

A silence falls across the land as the bomb almost in slow
motion falls towards the ground with a powerful grace.

Cliff looks up to see the bomb falling and quickly jumps,
grabbing Jimmy and throwing him over his shoulder.

Cliff runs across the battlefield as fast as he can. He
yells into his radio.

CLIFF
Everyone take cover! We're under
attack!

Cliff continues to run, but he is stopped when he is shot in
the leg and falls to the ground.

He starts to crawl in agony.

CLIFF (cont'd)
(out of breath)
Save yourselves!

Realizing his fate, he stops and turns up towards the sky and
watches the bomb collide with the earth.

The eerie silence is finally broken by an atomic wave of
destruction on a level that no human has ever seen before.

With great fervor, the first wave of radiation encompasses
every inch of the land knocking every man down to the ground.

Secondary and smaller waves continue to emit from the point
on contact quickly finding the men withering in wretched pain
as they slowly die.

There is not a living soul left on the ground.

INT. SATELLITE COMMAND CENTER - NIGHT

General Erickson stands unmoved by the events that just
unfolded.

Private Stevens takes a deep breath and removes his
headphones. He looks pale as sweat beads on his forehead.
He wipes the sweat away with a dazed look.

The other computer techs, Drummond and Martin, stand
horrified.

ERICKSON
(cold)
The events witnessed here today are
never to be spoken of again. It is
in your best interest to forget
every thing you have seen here
today or your fate will be worse
than that of 1st Lieutenant
Crenshaw. Am I understood?

DRUMMOND
(timid)
Yes... Sir.

MARTIN
(shaky)
Yes, Sir.

Stevens continues to stare blankly.

ERICKSON
Stevens, am I understood?

STEVENS
(quietly)
Yes, sir.

ERICKSON
Good. I'm glad that we all agree.
Now it's time to execute Mission:
Erebus.

FADE IN:

INT. AENEID - NIGHT

CAPTAIN ADLEI DANIELS, lies asleep in his bed on the cargo
ship, Aeneid. He is in his early forties, with a permanent
five o'clock shadow. Even though he has started to bald, he
keeps a very close and trim haircut.

A BUZZING NOISE can be heard that intermittently repeats that
there is an incoming call.

MESSAGE
Captain Daniels, there's an
incoming call.

There is a clock in the distant that reads, 3:58 AM.

He stirs in bed before slowly rolling out of bed. He holds
his head in his hands rubbing his eyes and then lifts himself
up.

He is only wearing a pair of boxers. His body is well
defined and toned. He has a tattoo over his right shoulder.
It is an eagle with its wings spread encircled by a ring of
olive branches with the Roman number XIV underneath it.

He has an intense looking scar across his chest which looks
almost like claw marks. He has another scar over his left
knee that snakes around the joint. He seems to favor this
leg, but rather than making him look weak it seems to make
him more iconic and invulnerable.

The incoming call is still going off.

MESSAGE (cont'd)
Captain Daniels, there's an
incoming call.

DANIELS
All right, all right. I heard you.

He moves to a table and then shuffles through a random
assortment of important looking papers shoving must of them
all the table revealing a flat top screen imbedded into the
table.

He touches the edge of the screen and a holographic desktop
pops up. He shuffles through a few things and finds a
picture id that jumps forward. It is a symbol that closely
resembles the one on his tattoo. It rotates in a 360 degree
fashion.

The voice now states.

MESSAGE
Incoming call. Military
Reassignment Command Center.

He reaches into to the holograph grabbing the symbol and
throws it down towards the screen.

MESSAGE (cont'd)
Transmission terminated.

DANIELS
(rubbing his head)
Do you ever shut up?

MESSAGE
(almost taunting)
You have 2 new messages.

Daniels looks over at the computer with a look of
disapproval.

DANIELS
You're really trying me today.

He gets up and starts getting dressed as the computer begins
to alert him of his message.

MESSAGE
Message 3.

COLLECTION AGENCY
Mr. Daniels, this is Darren with
the Federated Collections Agency.
Your account has been passed over
to us for collection. It seems you
have an account balance of
$8,576.32. Please give us a call
to discuss payment options. Thank
you.

DANIELS
How do these guys even find me?

MESSAGE
Message 2.

REASSIGNMENT COMMAND CENTER
(official sounding)
Captain Daniels this is the United
States Military Reassignment
Command Center. We have requested
your assistance in an official
matter. Please contact us for your
assignment details.

Daniels blows off the call. He acts like he has more
important things than to be bothered by the military.

MESSAGE
Message 3.

CHILD FOSTER SERVICES
Mr. Daniels, this is Robin with
Child Services.
This call is in regards to your
seven year old son, Adian and your
his hearing. As the details of
your case states, after the death
of your wife you were given one
year to prove long-term job history
and an adequate and steady monetary
income to gain full custody of
Adian. Please contact me at your
early convenience.

As soon as Daniels hears the message, he jumps up and
shuffles vigorously through the projected holograms. He
finds an image of his son. He desperately tries to touch
him, but receives static from his interference.

The message ends, the boys pictures disappears, and the
remaining holograms fall back to the table top screen.

Daniels stands over the table with a look of utter sadness
and intense agony.

He punches his fist into the table and hangs his head. He
looks as if he could fall to the ground at any moment.

He stands back up slowly with returned sense of purpose. He
takes a deep sigh and returns his hand over the screen.

He once again shuffles through holograms, finds the military
symbol, and then keys in a number through a virtual key pad.

REASSIGNMENT COMMAND CENTER
Reassignment Command Center.

DANIELS
This is Captain Adlei Daniels...

He pauses and takes a deep breath.

DANIELS (cont'd)
...reporting for reassignment.

REASSIGNMENT COMMAND CENTER
Thank you, Captain Daniels for your
returned call. You and the crew of
the Aeneid have been assigned to a
top-secret mission on the Planet
Erebus. You will be utilizing the
cargo carrying capacity of the
Aeneid. Report to Erebus for
further instruction.

DANIELS
Who is the commanding officer?

REASSIGNMENT COMMAND CENTER
Commanding officer is General
Erickson.

DANIELS
(to himself)
Erickson.

Daniels is silent and shuffles through the holographs and
finds a picture of Adian.

REASSIGNMENT COMMAND CENTER
Sir, is everything okay.

DANIELS
Tell him I'll be there. End
transmission.

Everything falls back into the screen. Daniels waves his
hand over the corner of the screen and everything goes black.
