Mission:Erebus Part II

Postby iamdavidbyrne » Tue Nov 18, 2008 9:17 am

Daniels stands up and walks towards his door. It slides open
and as he walks out it slides back.

INT. AENEID - NIGHT

The interior of the Aeneid is highly industrial. Trails of
poorly lit fluorescent bulbs line the hallways giving off an
eerie glow. Metal grates line the floors giving off an
echoing rattle with each step.

Daniels walks through the corridors, he turns left, then
turns right as he moves further through the maze and closer
to the command deck.

INT. COMMAND DECK - NIGHT

Things are quiet on the command deck. One member sits
quietly at the navigational center.

Jay sits in the navigational chair with a pair of headphones,
but not even the headphones are able to fully drown out the
techno beat oozing from the player.

Jay is in his mid-twenties, with a close shaved head and a
clean shaven face. He is dressed much like Daniels with
fatigues and a T-shirt.

He stares intently ahead spliting focus between the infinite
space in front of him as well as the array of computer
screens flanking him on both sides.

Daniels quietly walks up behind him. Jay bobs his head with
the music as he also occasionally mumbles the words of the
song in a high pitch voice.

Daniels grabs him by the shoulder. Jay practically jumps out
of his seat. The plug to his headphone unplugs filling the
navigational center full of intense beats.

Jay quickly turns the player off.

JAY
Jesus, Daniels. You trying to kill
a man.

Daniels can't help, but laugh at Jay's surprise.

DANIELS
How long you been on the night
shift?

JAY
I've been at my post since
midnight. I have till first shift
takes over at seven.

DANIELS
Why don't you head to your barrack?

JAY
Are you serious? This isn't some
of joke is it?

DANIELS
No, its not a joke. Just couldn't
sleep. Thought I'd do something
productive till morning.

JAY
Well, I know when to take an offer.

He quickly grabs his things and quickly moves towards the
doors.

JAY (cont'd)
See you tomorrow... or I guess I
mean today... tonight. Whatever.

Jay leaves the navigational center.

Daniels steps around and sits down in the navigational chair.
He takes a few seconds to adjust and get comfortable in the
seat.

He shifts the computer screen and monitors to his liking. He
starts typing up a few command prompts.

He turns back towards the door quietly looking to see if any
was around.

With the satisfaction of being alone, Daniels turns back
around and calls up the navigational charts on one the
computer screens.

The screen displays the charted path to Planet X. He shifts
towards the Aeneid from automatic pilot to manual override.

Daniels takes the handles with a firm grip briefly showing
the whites of his knuckles.

He turns the hands to the right slightly and leans into the
turn.

EXT. AENEID - NIGHT

The Aeneid makes a turn in the large void of space.

INT. AENEID - NIGHT

The navigational chart shows then making a dramatic departure
from their intended course to X.

Daniels eventually levels back out. He grips the steering
wheel even tighter and pushes the throttle forward. The
Aeneid gains speed at a miraculous rate as stars soon turn
into traces of light. The Aeneid has reached hyper-speed.

Daniels stares intently into the infinite array of light
before him as the computers flash rapidly before his eyes.

FADE OUT:

EXT. AENEID - DAY

The Aeneid looks like it is practically ripping through space
as light almost seems to bend around the ship.

INT. AENEID - DAY

Daniels has grown fatigued and weary, but still manages to
drive the ship at such an incredible speed.

A series of lights come on throughout the navigational
center. Morning has arrived.
One of the lights comes on over Daniels, and he seems to snap
out of the daze that he was in all night. He pulls the
throttles back as the Aeneid returns back to a more normal
speed, but still a fast one.

Through the front windows in a far off distance, the planet
Erebus can be seen.

The doors to the navigational deck open. The crew begins to
filter in slowly.

The first two that enter are LANET and TANK. Lanet is an
African American female in her mid-thirties. She has a
streak of tom boy that runs through her.

Tank is an African American male is his early thirties and
just like his name states, he is built like a tank. He
stands tall at 6' 5'' with a clean shaven head.

They notice Daniels is behind the wheel.

LANET
Don't tell me you're going easy on
Jay.

TANK
That boy's got no sense.

Daniels pulls back the throttles a little more to just a slow
crawl. He gets up and stands to talk to Lanet and Tank.

DANIELS
I offered to relieve him of his
post last night.

LANET
And why on earth would yo do that?

DANIELS
I was having trouble sleeping and
well because...

Before Daniels can even get another word out as to why he
took over the post BEATRICE marches through the sliding
doors.

BEATRICE
(with forcefulness)
Does someone care to tell me why
the hell we haven't reached X yet.

DANIELS
(slightly sarcastic)
Good morning, Beatrice.

BEATRICE
Don't good morning me, Adlei.
Where the hell are we?

DANIELS
We are 10,000 kilometers from the
planet Erebus.

Beatrice looks speechless.

LANET
Erebus? But that's nowhere near X.

BEATRICE
There is no way we could be that
far away.

LANET
There's a way.

TANK
Unbelievable. That would have had
to been what... 5 hours in hyper
speed.

DANIELS
Somewhere around that.

Tank extends his hand to shake, and Daniels shakes it
reluctantly.

TANK
The longest I've ever heard anybody
hyper solo is somewhere around two
hours... man, incredible.

BEATRICE
That's just great... let's see, 5
hours at hyper than by my
calculations we should be on the
verge of depleting all of our fuel.
Now you want to tell me why we're
heading towards Erebus.

DANIELS
The Aeneid has accepted another
mission.

BEATRICE
What about the X job?

DANIELS
This is an actual job, and X was
nothing more than a good faith
mission.

BEATRICE
Good faith?... It's those good
faith ventures that keeps this ship
going and puts food on the table.
The next time you decide to cancel
a mission would you please care to
discuss it with the rest of the
crew.

DANIELS
As Captain of this ship, my orders
are final. We will complete the
Erebus mission and return to X to
finish the job and remain in good
standing.

BEATRICE
Once again, that's great, but how
do you plan on getting us back to X
without any fuel. We won't have
enough fuel to even leave Erebus.

DANIELS
DyOx.

LANET
And what's DyOx.

DANIELS
Shortly after discovering the
existence of Erebus, the military
quickly learned of the planet's
desolation, and deemed the planet
useless. However, scientist on a
second look soon found the planet
offered more under the surface.
They found a combustible fuel that
possessed the possibilities of
becoming infinitely combustible.
So theoretically one tank of fuel
could last almost forever.
Scientist called it DyOx. We will
do our job and refuel with it
before leaving.

BEATRICE
I can't believe this.

Beatrice storms out of the navigational room. Daniels
watches as she walks away.

DANIELS
Lanet, please set a course for
Erebus. I will return with more
instructions in just a moment. I
have to talk to our contact to
receive further instructions.

LANET
Yes, sir.

Lanet steps towards the computer and begins programming a
course.

Daniels leaves the navigational deck.

INT. AENEID - DAY

Daniels makes his way once again through the tunnel of
hallways.

He enters through another set of sliding doors.

INT. COMMUNICATIONS DECK - DAY

Daniels walks to the center of the room where a chair is
sitting. He sits down in the chair. A keypad is at his
right hand. He paces through a series of numbers.

A screen sits before him measuring the entire length of the
wall. After patching through the numbers. The blank screen
turns white as the same military logo seen before appears on
the screen with the words "establishing remote connection"
followed by a loading bar.

Once the connection has been established, the screen connects
to a room where its location cannot be determined. In the
background is the military symbol.

General Erickson walks into frame and sits down where his
head is perfectly framed. And to Daniels, Erickson is now
roughly the size of the wall and very ominous looking.

The two men have intense stares as each waits for the other
to break the silence.

Daniels breaks down first.

DANIELS
(straightforward)
What's the mission?

ERICKSON
See, that is one of your many
reasons for why you didn't make a
good soldier. Failure to
acknowledge a high ranking officer;
a blatant disrespect for all rules
and authority.

DANIELS
(obviously annoyed)
I don't have time for your games,
Erickson. What is the mission?

Erickson settles back into his chair.

ERICKSON
The Aeneid has been assigned to
travel to the surface of Erebus in
the Mine Sectors. There have been
massive casualties, and the Aeneid
is to collect all casualties and
deliver them to the refinery plants
on the planet Y where you will
dispose of the bodies and all
evidence in the incinerator complex
of the XYZ Plant.

DANIELS
How many men are we talking?

ERICKSON
All of them.

DANIELS
All of them? What could have
possibly killed all of them.

ERICKSON
That information is classified.

DANIELS
If you want my crew to do you dirty
work, then I will need to know how
these men all died.

Once again, there is a standoff.

DANIELS (cont'd)
Whatever.... We'll do it.

ERICKSON
Good. And Captain Daniels, if you
plan on seeing your son, Adain,
then you will be successful in the
completion of this mission, and
your crew will forget all the
events that they have witnessed on
Erebus.

DANIELS
Don't threaten me you son of a
bitch.

ERICKSON
Once again like I said... a blatant
disrespect for all rules and
authority.

Daniels slams his hand down on the key pad, and the screen is
filled with static and then returns to black again.

He sits there for a moment. He takes a deep breath, reaches
down, and pushed a button.

DANIELS
All hands to the meal hall. All
hands to the meal hall.

He sits back in his chair and stares into the black screen.

FADE OUT:

INT. MILITARY CRAFT - NIGHT

Daniels sits in the cargo hull of a military surveillance
jet. He is in his late twenties. He is heavily dressed in
military gear. He has a deeply concentrated look on his
face.

ROGER, sits next to him with a more relaxed look. Roger is
another white male in his late twenties, and is dressed in
the same fashion.

Roger leans in towards Daniels.

ROGER
You ready to do this.

Daniels nods his head. Roger extends his hand up and holds
it there.

Daniels slaps hands with him as they briefly squeeze their
hands.

They both stand up, and head towards the back of the plane.
Roger hits a switch, and the back bay of the plane opens up.

From the opened bay, it is easy to see that the plane is
extremely high above the surface.

ROGER (cont'd)
See you on the ground.

He pushes Daniels in the chest and he jumps out of the back
of the plane.

Daniels steps up to the back of the plane and stares at the
planet before him for a moment and then runs and leaps out
the back of the plane.

EXT. EREBUS ATMOSPHERE - NIGHT

Daniels pulls himself into a high inverted dive. He can see
Roger in the distance also in an equally high paced dive.

Daniels surveys the land and slowly pulls himself out of his
descent to a slower pace. He reaches to his vest and pulls
on the cord yanking him upward when his parachute deploys.

Daniels floats down through the air. He looks over towards
Roger whose parachute has not opened yet.

Daniels holds onto an intercom on his vest.

DANIELS
Quit kidding around and pull your
chute, man.

Roger's voice comes through the speaker.

ROGER (O.C.)
(frantic)
The chutes not opening!

DANIELS
(alarmed)
Pull the reserve.

ROGER
I did. Nothing is happening!

Roger has dropped considerably and the ground is coming at an
alarming rate.

Daniels reaches down by his side and pulls out a knife. He
reaches over his head and cuts the parachute strings. He
starts dropping rapidly.

Daniels gets his mark of where Roger is and Daniels puts
himself back into a high inverted dive.

DANIELS
I'm coming for you. Just hold on.

He increases his speed even more.

ROGER
I'm not going to make it, man!

The ground is immensely close and both men are still falling
fast.

Daniels flies right into Roger and grabs him.

DANIELS
Hold on!

Roger grabs hold but his grip is not perfect.

They are almost to the ground.

Daniels reaches to his vest and pulls the emergency reserve
chute. He shoots back up as the chute catches the air. The
force from being jerked back into the air causes Roger to
lose his grip, as he falls to the ground.

DANIELS (cont'd)
Roger!

Daniels cannot do anything to save Roger. He can only watch
as his friend collides with the earth with such a force that
no man could survive.

EXT. EREBUS - NIGHT

Daniels tries to fight to slow his descent but there is not
way he can stop. He crashes into the ground brutally
snapping his knee cap.

He screams in agonizing pain, but manages to pull himself
across the dirt towards Roger's body.

Roger is face down in the dirt. Daniels flips him over.

DANIELS
Come on, Roger.... Roger.

He tries to get a response out of him, but he is
unresponsive.

Daniels puts his head down to Roger's chest to listen for a
heartbeat. There is nothing.

Daniels holds onto the intercom on his vest.

DANIELS (cont'd)
Help us!

Daniels just looks up to the sky and yells at the top of his
lungs. Then he collapses on the ground and passed out from
the pain.
